At the campsite opposite ours. One can literally see the sunrays through the canopy of trees.

This is beautiful work. The light piercing the tree throughout the top half of the frame creates a great pool of negative space, leading my eyes toward the shot's even more visually stunning bottom half. Here, the angled light beam intersects wonderfully with the vertical structure and with the horizontal fence. This serves two purposes, working to guide my eye once again to the bottom of the frame while also contributing to the shot's fantastical atmosphere. Both the structure and the fence would appear cold and lifeless otherwise, but the light brings them a great vibrant effect. That the structure is partially hidden by the large tree also adds to the overall sense of mystery. Sweet.

I can count forty fat women in spandex power-walking circles around me as I stare at a deserted baseball field, writing a rap in red pen on the back of a printed e-mail folded twice.

I almost agree with you, but the fact the tree is overlapping the building does not appeal my eye. If the image was taken just a little to the left or to the right would have been better for the mistery sense, with the building being bathed by the sun in the center of the image. Well, that's my opinion on a very good effort...
